Attorney Profile

James Murphy, a founding partner of Adler Murphy & McQuillen LLP, has extensive experience in complex litigation and large class action lawsuits involving mass disaster and environmental and toxic tort claims. Additionally, he represents numerous airlines and product component manufacturers and has practiced before twelve federal jurisdictions and the courts of twenty-two states. Jim has chaired numerous arbitration panels through the Circuit Court of Cook County's Mandatory Arbitration Program. He is a member of the American Bar Association (Forum Committee on Air & Space Law; Section of Environment, Energy & Resources; Section of Litigation; Environmental Litigation Committee; Mass Tort Litigation Committee; Tort Trial and Insurance Practice Section) and the Chicago Bar Association.

A native of Chicago, Jim enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1970 and served as a secure communications specialist aboard the aircraft carriers U.S.S. Independence and U.S.S. John F. Kennedy and at the Pentagon Office of the Chief of Naval Operations. (Read more about Jim's military life here )  After law school, Jim went to work as an associate with John Adler at Conklin & Adler Ltd., and later, as a partner, Jim was a founding partner with John Adler of two successful law firms.

Outside of the office, Jim volunteered his services for twenty years as a coach for the Chicago Public School's mock trial competition.For ten years, he was an active member and officer of several organizations supporting the U.S.Air Force Academy and families of cadets and airmen. Jim now devotes most of his volunteer activity to training runners raising money for a variety of charities.

Jim is an avid runner and veteran of a few dozen marathons-and several ultramarathons, including the prestigious Comrades Marathon - the world's oldest and largest ultramarathon, a 56 mile race through the hills of South Africa. He has also qualified for the famous Boston Marathon twice. He is a member of the Chicago Area Runners Association and volunteers in the training of novice marathoners on behalf of numerous charitable organizations. (Read the article written on Jim in the Chicago Athlete Magazine) Jim is happily married to a speechpathologist and is the proud father of two sons and a daughter-in-law who are currently serving on active duty with the U.S. military and a third son who is an IT professional for a school district in Wisconsin.
